What is “Pastured” and a little on how we are different.

We hear all the time in our conversations, So you’re organic? Aw, you have free range chickens, you have grass fed chickens, your a tree hugger, do you feed grain to your cows, what’s the cattle market prices now? All these questions/assumptions are the initial perception of what we do…and you know folks, perception is reality to the individual doing the perceiving. So what I would like to do is share a little of what we do? This is the basics. Certainly in a few typed words I can not explain everything that goes into managing a pastured based livestock farm. So again, I will give you just the jist! After the Covid-19 settles down and society finds it acceptable again to interact and exchange a common courtesy handshake we will officially be offering our synergy tours which take folks on a tour of the farm showing and explaining some of our management, methodology and the science behind why it works. But until then we will share from a minimum of 6 feet away through cyber waves.

What is pastured? We are a pastured based farm which means our animals are managed through grasses. It’s what they all get a chance to eat and we as the caretakers of the land manage to grow more and more of… grass. Intensive grazing is part of our daily. We do not put cows or sheep or chickens or hogs in one spot and leave them there to sleep in their own feces for a month, drink from the toilet or eat a piece of grass that just surfaced the soil. We mimic what these type animals would do in nature with electric fence and hard core management!

HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO GET YOUR BED SHEETS CHANGED EVERY NIGHT? YEAH, I KNOW! HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO CHOSE FROM A GOURMET SALAD BAR EVERYDAY WITH FRESHLY PICKED GREENS? HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO KNOW YOU WOULD BE TREATED LIKE THIS THE REMAINDER OF YOUR LIFE ON EARTH?

This is what we promise our animals that become your food. Can we not at least respect the gift of their exsisitance by putting them in an environment they can fully express their talents, skills and social practices Creation gave them? And surely, if we choose to pursue such a journey to commit to ownership of these animals and put them in a controlled space with fences, can we not simply take care of them? And most importantly if these animals are to feed our microbial gut microbes and build our muscles and make our brains perform like Creation intended, surely we feel it is important we steward the development of our living “to be” food with an abundance of pride and management that is unmatched. For Gods sake… we will eat these things! Ok Farmer Adam, you are getting off topic! Sorry, but not really.

“Pastured” is a farm that focuses its success or faliure on grasses and legumes. Pastured is also usually affiliated with rotational grazing of animals which means the animals leave the area they are on and move to new pasture that has had time to rest and recover. “Free range” does not indicate the animals are moved off of used space and moved to a new space and lost access to the old space. Free range simply means they have an option to expose themselves to the out of doors for a certain time during the day. It doesn’t quantify the space or the time.

Are we organic? No! We are beyond organic! Organic simply means what an animal is fed. The feed used or the grasses they eat have not been sprayed or treated with un approved organic chemicals. That’s it! It’s doesn’t include the way the animal was treated, was it moved to fresh grass, or did it drink from a toilet. Certified organic is only certifying the animal didn’t eat chemical laden feed. That’s it! At Kickin’ Grass Farm we go above and beyond the term “organic”. One of our goals is to be as sustainable as possible, meaning everything we need is here. There is no waste in nature and that is what we strive for. Everything can be an asset to something else and that something else is an asset to another something else and so on. Yes, it is a circle and we humans are the only thing that has ever broken the circle. We are land healers, we are observers of nature and try our best to mimic what it has to teach on a small parcel of land while growing protein packed herbivores and omnivores to sustain our bodies.

The gist. Through intensive management and working with nature we raise superior protein products we can deliver to your door! We are a farm you can visit (post the Covid 19 craziness) land managers and have animals with an immune system. We do not use chemicals or drugs and respect an honor what Creation has given us. We believe this food is the medicine you will never have to take!

Until next time… “Love all good things, observe more than speak, influence the youth, thank the elderly and may the sun shine upon your face, the wind be always at your back and may God bless you and keep you until paradise.”
